FAQs

Why Movement?
Why explore relational dynamics through movement? We experience our lives through our bodies, yet much of what we communicate happens outside of our conscious awareness. Through guided movement exercises, this workshop supports you in developing greater awareness of yourself and your partner, allowing you to deepen your relationship in ways that often go beyond what traditional talk therapy or counseling can offer.

What Is This Workshop?
This workshop offers you and your partner/friend a supported space to explore your relational styles through movement. Through guided exploration, you’ll gain new insights into the dynamics shaping your connection as well as a deeper understanding of yourself, and discover ways to lean into your bond as you move through challenges together.

What Should I Expect?

Most of the workshop will be devoted to facilitated movement explorations that you’ll do solely with your partner or close friend, followed by time to debrief after each exercise. We will conclude with an optional exercise that includes witnessing and being witnessed by another couple.
There will be a significant amount of movement, with flexibility around pacing, rest, and taking breaks as needed. After each movement exploration, there will be time to reflect with your partner and/or with the group.

Topics explored may include:
  • pursuer / withdrawer dynamics and strategies
  • leading and following
  • tracking each other
  • leaning in and being seen
  • witnessing

This experience may reflect aspects of how you relate, including coping mechanisms, relational style, challenges or wounds, and patterns of connection. It can bring up vulnerable material, so I strongly recommend carving out time for aftercare- keep your schedule open afterward and plan to do something nourishing and supportive for both of you following the workshop.

Who Is This For?
This workshop is for couples and/or close friends who are interested in exploring their relational dynamic. If you are not in a partnership, you can certainly come with a close friend who you are interested in deepening your connection with! No prior movement experience is needed.

About The Facilitator
Hi, I’m Maya! I am a somatic therapist who works with couples and individuals supporting them in discovering new and fulfilling ways to interact with their worlds. I also teach Contact Improvisation and spend a lot of my time exploring and training movement in different forms. I started dreaming about this workshop in 2015 after seeing the potential of exploring our relational patterns through movement while dancing and studying Somatic Psychotherapy at Naropa.

Movement has become a very useful tool for me to understand my own patterns and ways in which I carry myself and relate. Learning to explore dynamics with others through the body has allowed me to lean in, express my needs and desires, and develop healthy boundaries. And that has been very powerful in creating a life that I love – I look forward to sharing my work and insights with you!
