FAQs

Why Movement?
Why is it important to explore our relational dynamics through movement? We experience our life through our bodies and most of the time we are not aware of how (or even what!) we are communicating. The exercises in this workshop will support you in gaining greater awareness and understanding of yourself and your partner so that you can deepen your relationship beyond what traditional talk-therapy/counseling can provide.

What Is This Workshop?
This workshop is a time for you and your partner/friend to explore, with professional support, your relating styles through movement. The exercises will help you gain new insights about relational dynamics that are influencing your relationship. You will also learn some ways in which you can lean into your connection to move through and with challenges that arise.

What Should I Expect?
The majority of the workshop will be oriented towards exploring solely with your partner/close friend in facilitated movement exercises with debriefs after each one. We will end with an optional exercise that involves witnessing and being witnessed by another couple.

There will be a lot of movement and there will be lots of flexibility around pacing and taking breaks. After every movement exploration there will be time to debrief with your partner and/or with the group.

Topics that are explored include:

  • pursuer/withdrawer dynamic
  • leading and following
  • tracking each other
  • leaning in and being seen
  • witnessing

This experience will likely reflect things about the way you relate, your coping mechanisms, your style, your challenges or wounds, and your way of relating. It might bring up vulnerable material! So I strongly recommend carving some time out for after-care aka keep your schedule open after and do something that feels nourishing and supportive for both of you after the workshop.

Who Is This For?
This workshop is for couples and/or close friends who are interested in exploring their relational dynamic. If you are not in a partnership, you can certainly come with a close friend who you are interested in deepening your connection with! No movement experience is needed.

About The Facilitator
Hi, I’m Maya! I am a somatic therapist who works with couples and individuals helping them discover new and fulfilling ways to interact with their worlds. I also teach Contact Improvisation and spend a lot of my time exploring and training movement in different forms. I started dreaming about this workshop in 2015 after seeing the potential of exploring our relational patterns through movement while dancing and studying Somatic Psychotherapy at Naropa.

Movement has become a very useful tool for me to understand my own patterns and ways in which I carry myself and relate. Learning to explore dynamics with others through the body has allowed me to lean in, express my needs and desires, and develop healthy boundaries. And that has been very powerful in creating a life that I love – I look forward to sharing my work and insights with you!
